Textbook of Co-ordinate Geometry Paperback

1 January 2022

Rs 450.00

This textbook contains a treatment of the various topics in analytical geometry intended for the school students at senior secondary level who want to prepare for CBSE, ICSE school exams or competitive examinations like IIT JEE (Main and advanced), National Science Olympiads, KVPY and other scholarship level tests in mathematics of the various Examining Boards. Co-ordinate geometry enables one to transform a geometric problem to an algebraic one, which can be handled with greater ease. However, the students sometimes fail to draw a geometric interpretation after the algebraic solution has been obtained, for the problem is geometric, and algebra is a means to its solution, not the end. This book will compel the student to visualize the problem at hand, and the solution once it is algebraically obtained.

This way, the student will develop an instinct to figure out the best approach without having to solve problems using long tedious methods. The text begins with a chapter on coordinates, followed by chapters on the straight lines, circle, parabola, ellipse and hyperbola. Chapter-4 gives an introduction to the conic sections, which offers a geometrical proof of three dimensional definitions of conics into two dimensions. Solved examples included in the text are there for the purpose of illustration and clarification of the text, and examples at the end of each chapter are solved in a systematic and methodical manner with ample diagrams and detailed explanations. There are multiple solutions and approaches for some problems that provide more conceptual clarity. Exercises have been provided for each section and, in addition, each chapter ends with a miscellaneous set of problems. Further, answers are included at the end of the book.

Prof Neelam’s and Prof Hegde’s book “Textbook of Physics” Volume-1 in Mechanics is a great book for students aspiring to master problem solving for JEE, Olympiads and similar exams. The book also offers concise yet sufficient theory. There are a good number of carefully chosen problems – both solved and unsolved, to bring a student’s level up to and even slightly beyond JEE Advanced. In the book, the authors explain difficult concepts well; the Calculus part used is precise and meaningful, and it is clear that the authors have taken a genuine interest to guide the reader through advanced problem solving techniques and offered solutions that are quite original, innovative and to-the-point. Great to see such seasoned educators in creative action! Arvind Chauhan (mentor to 14 JEE Advanced top 10 AIRs)

Book Preface

We are pleased to present some topics in analytical geometry in the form of this book intended for the school students at senior secondary level who want to prepare for competitive examinations like IIT JEE (Main and advanced), National Science Olympiads, KVPY and other scholarship level tests in mathematics of the various examining boards.

Co-ordinate geometry enables one to transform a geometric problem to an algebraic one, which can be handled with greater ease. However, students sometimes fail to draw a geometric interpretation after the algebraic solution has been obtained, for the problem is geometric, and algebra is a means to its solution, not the end. This book will compel the student to visualize the problem at hand, and the solution once it is algebraically obtained. This way, the student will develop an instinct to figure out the best approach without having to solve problems using long tedious methods.

The text begins with a chapter on coordinates, followed by chapters on primitive geometric figures like straight lines, circle, parabola, ellipse and hyperbola. The exercises are intended for the students to try out the concepts and gain better insights.

Though we have tried our level best to edit and eliminate all types of errors, a book of this nature cannot claim to be without errors, we would be glad to receive your comments in order to make the necessary changes in later editions.

We are grateful to Prof Sriram Hegde, IIT Delhi, for his valuable suggestions and guidance and also for his constant motivation. We will be failing in our duty if we do not acknowledge the efforts of Srija Anand, IIIT-Delhi, for painstakingly going through the draft, suggesting corrections and modifications. We owe our sincere thanks to Dipesh Kumar Aarya for beautifully typesetting the book. Last but not the least, we wish to express our sincere thanks to those who contributed directly or indirectly in making this book a reality.
